Ten years ago I was invited on a journey. Friend and Pastor David Lee asked me to commit to one hundred commissions delivered weekly for sermon illustrations. The whole project ended up taking considerably longer than one hundred four weeks. In the end there were quite a few pieces that suffered from time crunches and my skill level. The goal of this project is to revisit each piece to see how I’ve grown as an artist.
The Fall
Dave’s original ask for The Fall was a bitten apple rotting from the source of the bite to invoke the concept of original sin. I ran with the idea and pushed the rot into the foundation on which the apple sat to really hammer home the concept of corruption. I also sneaked a dig in at Dave’s favorite electronic device manufacturer by making sure the bite was on the right side of the apple and a nearly perfect “c” shape. For the redux I’ve made a much more natural bite, and oriented the apple left which felt more natural to me. I reworked the pattern of the rot to be more of a swirling ripple to echo the explosive swirls of the creation piece.
